Best Laptop, The best laptop for most people

CPU: Apple M1
Graphics: Apple M1
Screen: 13.3-inch 2,560 x 1,600 pixel-resolution Retina display
+Astounding power
+Excellent build quality
+Sturdy, luxe design
+Giant battery life
-More ports would be nice
-Webcam still not great

Apple's cheapest laptop, the MacBook Air (M1, 2020), is the beginnings of a revolution, as our review reveals. Do you believe that power must be sacrificed in order for thin and light laptops to exist? That is no longer the case. Or that a high level of performance equates to shorter battery life? Nope. Or that combining all of these functions into a single machine would be prohibitively expensive? Again, I'm mistaken. It's the finest of all possible universes. It's all thanks to the M1 CPU, Apple's initial Mac processor. It's an eight-core processor that's as powerful as those found in high-end MacBook Pros and gaming PCs but consumes a fraction of the energy. This laptop is quick thanks to the fastest storage in the industry. It also runs cold enough that no fans are required, making it completely silent.

It even has decent graphics performance, with games running considerably more smoothly than anything else with an integrated GPU (though, being a Mac, the selection is more limited). In real-world use (for things like light browsing), it can last up to 15 hours — a significant improvement over prior Macs. Comfort and usefulness are also superb — the keyboard and trackpad are excellent, the size and weight are ideal for portability, and the all-aluminum construction is strong and premium. With a reasonable degree of brightness, the sharp screen is also a delight to use. Best Curved Gaming Monitor 2022

It's far from perfect. It's a shame it only has two USB-C connections (which must also be used to power it) because that means you'll almost certainly require adapters, but maybe you're already all-in on wireless and cloud. There may be some software compatibility issues with the new CPU, but these are usually minor and won't affect the vast majority of consumers.

The standard specs of 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM may be insufficient for some, but you can upgrade and customize your device when you buy it - albeit you can't add more later. If you absolutely need more power, a Macbook Pro (#4 on our list) would be a better choice - check out our Macbook Air M1 vs Macbook Pro M1 comparison for more information. The MacBook Air is a laptop that blends portability and power with little compromises, as long as you can live without Windows.

Check out our should I purchase it guide for more information on the MacBook Air M1 2020, as well as how it compares to a 2021 version.

Storage: 256GB / 512GB / 1TB

+Comfortable, eye-catching keyboard
-Not the cheapest out there
-Screen sticks to 1080p
-16:9 aspect ratio display

Do you have a strong attachment to Windows? The Asus VivoBook S15 is the greatest mid-range Windows 10 laptop available right now. Despite the 15.6-inch screen, it's light and sleek, and it encapsulates just much everything you might want in a laptop in one enticing package. The pricing is a touch steep, but you get a lot of bang for your buck, including the latest 11th-generation Intel CPUs (i5 or i7). Unless you want to play top-tier games or do some 4K video editing, those chips will ensure good performance without consuming too much battery life, and this portable computer will handle everything you throw at it.

Best Laptop, The best premium Mac laptop

CPU: Apple M1 Pro or Apple M1 Max
Graphics: Apple M1 Pro or Apple M1 Max
RAM: Up to 64GB
Screen: 14.2-inch (3024 x 1964 pixels) or 16-inch (3456 x 2234 pixels)
Storage: Up to 8GB
+Top-tier performance
+Quality design
+Excellent display
-We're not sure about the display notch

Apple has updated its top-tier 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks with its new M1 Pro and M1 Max CPUs, and the results are spectacular – top-tier performance with massive battery life all in one machine. If you want the greatest laptops Apple has to offer, these are the ones to get, assuming you have deep enough funds.

The only potential disadvantage here is the hefty costs – especially if you increase the RAM and SSD storage – but we don't think you'll be dissatisfied with one of these no matter how much you spend. These MacBook Pros are unquestionably superior to their predecessors.

Apple has also nailed all of the minor details, like the 1080p webcam improvement and the removal of the Touch Bar (which never seemed like a well-thought-through idea). It's up to you, Windows laptop manufacturers because you're up against some very tough competition.

Best Laptop, The best premium laptop for streaming video

CPU: 11th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7
Graphics: Intel Iris Xe Graphics
RAM: Up to 16GB
Screen: 14-inch
Storage: Up to 1TB
+Powerful performance
+Great sound
+High-quality display
-Basic stylus
-Average battery life

Best Top Rated Laptop: The Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 is a premium laptop with a leather coating on the lid and a glass touchpad incorporated into the matching palm rest. It may appear a little extravagant, but anyone who appreciates a touch of class will enjoy how refined the design is.

The combination of a high-quality 4K display and its own miniature soundbar with Dolby Atmos, which delivers ultra-clear 360-degree audio, makes it ideal for streaming video. That isn't something you see every day, and the difference is noticeable.

Business customers will love the laptop's sheer speed; it's ideal for productivity. It's really fast, with 11th Gen Intel Core processors, and it can handle just about anything. The low-profile keyboard is a joy to text on, and you can turn this PC into a tablet simply by moving the screen backward. There's even a stylus built right into the laptop's chassis.

The battery life could be better, and the touchpad wasn't always responsive, but these are minor flaws in an otherwise excellent piece of equipment. The Lenovo Yoga 9i 14 is best suited for business users, but it could also be a good pick for students looking to invest in a high-end computer.

6. LG GRAM 17 (2021)

Best Laptop, A super thin and light laptop with powerful internal hardware

CPU: Intel Core i7-1165G7 (2.8 GHz, Turbo up to 4.7 GHz, L3 Cache 12MB, 28W)
Graphics: Intel Iris Xe Graphics
Screen: 17-inch IPS WQXGA 2560 X 1600
Storage: 256GB SSD
+Fantastic 17-inch screen
+Lightweight, stylish design
+Plenty of battery life
-Not a touchscreen

As we mentioned in our complete LG Gram 17 review (2021), this is a laptop that, although having a massive 17-inch screen, weighs only 1,350 grams (almost 3 lbs) and is highly portable thanks to its slim proportions (26.01 x 38.02 x 1.78 cm).

The laptop's portability is aided by a powerful core hardware configuration that includes an Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor, Intel Iris XE graphics chip, 16GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. Put a fresh copy of Windows 10 on top, and you've got yourself a fantastic machine.

An outstanding system that is backed up with long battery life, a nice keyboard, and good audio for a laptop.

Best Top Rated Laptop: Overall, the LG Gram 17 is a premium ultraportable laptop that will fit well-heeled professionals to a tee and will prepare them properly for when they are once again required to travel to and from the office and briefings on a regular basis.

8. HP SPECTRE X360 (2021)

Best Laptop, A brilliant Windows alternative to the MacBook Air

CPU: 11th-generation Intel Core i5 – i7
Graphics: Intel Iris Xe
RAM: 8-16GB
Screen: 13.3" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS BrightView micro-edge WLED-backlit multitouch – 13.3" diagonal 4K (3840 x 2160) UWVA BrightView micro-edge AMOLED multitouch
Storage: 256GB to 2TB SSD
+11th Generation Intel processors
+Better graphics
+Superb battery life
+Beautiful design
-Pricey compared to similar spec rivals
-Limited connectivity

Every subsequent iteration of the Spectre improves on the previous, and the 2021 model includes 11th generation Intel Core processors and Intel Iris Xe graphics.

The 2021 Spectre keeps the 2-in-1 design and stunning appearance of its CPU, and its closest competitor in terms of build quality is Apple's M1 MacBook Pro, which is in a different league than other Windows 10 laptops. The keyboard is excellent, the screen is bright and crisp, and it's a very attractive computer with nice ergonomics and robust security; the only serious critique we have is that the fans can become quite noisy when driven hard.

Best Top Rated Laptop: This isn't a gaming laptop, but it's more than capable of doing other tasks. It can last 13 hours on a single charge and converts from a laptop to a tablet, with plenty of customization possibilities. It's not the cheapest Windows laptop on the market, but if you hunt around, you can find a good deal.

Best Laptop, The best compact premium laptop for Mac users

CPU: Apple M1
Graphics: Apple M1
Screen: 13.3-inch 2,560 x 1,600 pixel-resolution Retina with P3 and True Tone
Storage: 256GB
+Blazing speed
+All-day battery
+Excellent build quality
-Lack of ports
-Design is a tad dated

Best Top Rated Laptops The 14-inch and 16-inch M1 MacBook Pros have already been mentioned, but these computers are so outstanding that we also want to emphasize the 13.3-inch model. It has a fan and a more powerful 8-core GPU than the MacBook Air, so it doesn't have to reduce performance to stay cool under sustained stress like the MacBook Air does. In normal computing, you won't notice the difference or hear the fan, but the Pro is substantially faster than the Air for intense activities like video rendering.

There are some clear differences between this MacBook Pro and the subsequent models, not least the screen size: a 13.3-inch screen is lovely and portable, but it lacks the screen area of the larger models. Additional expensive models also have more configuration options and ports; here, you're limited to two. However, the M1 Mac has a long battery life, which is important for professionals on the go. This is a professional laptop that can last a whole day on a single charge. Visit our Apple MacBook Pro (M1, 2020) review for a more in-depth look at this computer.

13. DELL XPS 15 (2020)

Best Laptop, The step-up power users will want over the Dell XPS 13

CPU: 10th Gen Intel Core i5 – i9
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti
RAM: 8GB – 64GB
Storage: 512GB – 1TB SSD
Screen: 15.6" FHD+ (1920 x 1200) IPS - UHD+ (3840 x 2400)
+A beast at max spec
+Stylish and light
+WiFi 6 networking
-Low-res webcam
-Can get pricey
-Average GPU

The Dell XPS 15 is a more niche premium laptop recommendation than our best premium laptop, the Dell XPS 13. Despite the fact that it can be built up to a higher spec, this is the case. The reason it doesn't gain the nod over its younger sibling is that most consumers don't need the power and performance that a maximum spec provides. The Dell XPS 15 is just unnecessary, and unless you require a 15.6-inch screen, we prefer the Dell XPS 13.

However, if you're a power user who needs a 15-inch screen, the Dell XPS 15 is unquestionably the best option. It has a 10th Gen Intel Core i9 CPU, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti GPU, 64GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 4K Ultra HD+ screen at its maximum specification. In layman's words, it's a monster of a system that can handle any application you can throw at it. This is the type of equipment that, when properly configured, can edit 4K and even 8K videos. It also has a long battery life, thanks to a robust internal cell stack, so you can execute high-level computing on the go.

All of this awesomeness comes at a price, as consumers will have to fork over more than three grand to take the system home. Is it really worth it? Yes, you're getting a fantastic powerful notebook, but most consumers seeking a premium laptop would be better served by a Dell XPS 13. For additional information, see our Dell XPS 15 9500 reviews.

Graphics: Intel Iris Xe Graphics up to Nvidia GeForce MX450 GPU
RAM: Up to 32GB
Storage: Up to 1TB
Screen: 14-inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel touchscreen and 12.65-inch, 1920 x 515 pixel touchscreen
+It has two displays
+Solid typing experience
+Plenty of power
-The second screen – if you don't use it
-Weird keyboard arrangement
-Relatively weak graphics performance

The Asus ZenBook Duo 14's major party trick – and it's a fantastic one – is a second screen underneath the main one. It may be used for anything, from Photoshop dialogue boxes to Spotify playlists to social media feeds, and Windows will regard it like any other second monitor.

It's fair to say that if you don't see yourself utilizing the second screen on a daily basis, this laptop won't appeal to you as much, but it's also quite well built and specced, with a beautiful main display. The battery life is also good, so you won't have to worry about missing a day at work.

The ZenBook Duo 14 will give you enough of power under the hood, thanks to the latest 11th-generation Intel laptops inside, while serious gamers will require more GPU oomph. A laptop with a wacky gimmick that isn't all that wacky, and one of the greatest laptops on the market right now.

Gaming laptops: Because they come with dedicated graphics cards, the best gaming laptops are great for hardcore gamers. With dedicated GPUs, you may experience greater resolutions and framerates in video games, as well as complex graphical features like real-time ray tracing. They are more expensive to purchase than general-purpose laptops.

Ultraportable laptops: Ultrabooks and the best lightweight laptops excel at portability, with designs that are frequently thinner and lighter than general-purpose or gaming laptops. These systems are ideal for working individuals who frequently travel and need to carry their laptops with them. The specifications vary, but because of the sleek looks, these laptops tend to cost more than general-purpose laptops.

Hybrid laptops: The best 2-in-1 laptops on the market have dual-function capabilities, allowing them to be used as both a laptop and a tablet. This makes them extremely adaptable, as well as a wonderful way to save money by just having to buy one product rather than two. The truth is that today's laptop manufacturers are few and far between. Indeed, we believe that the most common error people make today is purchasing a laptop that is inadequate for their needs.

There are, however, laptop manufacturers who have proven themselves over decades of successful laptop manufacturing. These manufacturers create laptops with superb fit and finish, good core functionality, and, most importantly, excellent support after the sale.

Dell, Lenovo, HP, Apple, Asus, Acer, Microsoft, and LG are among the manufacturers we consider to be the finest at what they do.
