Atlee's next Hindi-language action thriller film Jawan (transl. Soldier) is written and directed by him. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara, Sanya Malhotra, and Priyamani in dual roles. Anirudh Ravichander composed the score.

Principal photography began in September 2021, with locations including Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Rajasthan, and Aurangabad. Jawan was supposed to be released on June 2, 2023, however, it was delayed owing to post-production issues. It will now be released in theaters on September 7, 2023, to coincide with Janmashtami.

Jawan Release Date

Jawan was set to be released in Hindi on June 2, 2023, with dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu. Later in May 2023, it was revealed that the picture had been postponed until August 2023. The film was later reported to be released on the original release date, but it was later confirmed that it will be released on September 7, 2023.

A. R. Rahman was reportedly approached by director Atlee to provide music for the film. Rahman however denied the chance for unexplained reasons, and Anirudh Ravichander was picked to write for the film, which would be his debut as a solo composer in Bollywood, having previously composed a song for David and the background soundtrack for Jersey. T-Series purchased the song rights.

Development

It was believed in late 2019 that Shah Rukh Khan would collaborate with Tamil film director Atlee, and the movie was confirmed in 2020. It was announced in May 2021 that filming will begin soon.

Casting

Nayanthara was cast as the lead role, making her Hindi film debut. Later additions to the cast included Priyamani, Sunil Grover, Sanya Malhotra, and Yogi Babu. Babu re-joined Khan after a decade, most recently in Chennai Express. Rana Daggubati was offered the antagonist role but declined due to health concerns, therefore Vijay Sethupathi took it. Deepika Padukone joined the cast in Chennai in August 2022 to film her cameo. Thalapathy Vijay was confirmed to make a cameo in the film in September 2022. Sanjay Dutt joined the cast in March 2023 to film an action-packed cameo.

Filming

Principal photography will begin in Pune in September 2021. Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara participated in the 10-day shoot. Khan will begin filming in Hyderabad in June 2022. Nayanthara joined the Mumbai schedule on June 26, 2022, following her marriage. This schedule included some family sequences.

The following schedule began in August in Chennai, where Deepika Padukone appeared in a cameo role. Vijay Sethupathi later joined the shoot. This schedule had some action sequences between Khan and Sethupathi. In this schedule, a song starring Priyamani and Khan was also shot in jail. On October 7, a month-long Chennai schedule concluded.

The next schedule was conducted in October in Rajasthan. Khan and Nayanthara have joined this 20-day schedule. The next schedule was held in February 2023, during which Khan shot several chase scenes. On March 20, 2023, Sanjay Dutt joined the cast for an action-packed cameo. The production was finally completed in April 2023.
