Instagram used to have a chronological feed, but like Facebook, it was replaced with an algorithmic feed that only showed the most relevant posts. While some people were unhappy with the adjustment, the two social media behemoths from Meta remained unchanged.

The chronological stream, on the other hand, appears to be making a reappearance shortly, possibly in the first quarter of 2022. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri disclosed during a Senate hearing that the company is working on a version of a chronological feed that they expect to introduce next year, in the first quarter of 2022.

Instagram PR Team confirmed it as well

He also stated that he believes that users should be able to sort posts chronologically. Following that, Instagram's PR team confirmed the same thing on Twitter.

However, this decision could be rash because just a few months ago, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom published a blog post titled 'Shedding More Light on How Instagram Works,' in which he defended the algorithmic ranking, claiming that by 2016, people were missing 70% of all their posts in feed, including nearly half of posts from close friends, and that's why Instagram created an algorithmic feed that ranked posts.

Is a Chronological Feed better?

This abrupt shift in attitude could point to some of the issues the algorithmic feed has brought with it, most notably, misinformation. Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen also pushed strongly in favor of a chronological feed, claiming that it would prevent the spread of misinformation by not boosting earlier postings and would be devoid of algorithmic bias.

The Instagram PR Team's tweets don't appear to imply that the app will adapt the chronological feed; rather, it may simply provide a choice to users who wish to return to the good old days. However, the exact nature of this modification will not be exposed until the algorithmic feed is reinstalled next year.
