Dirt 4 The remaining game modes in Dirt 4 are Rally, Rallycross, and Landrush. While Rally is the root of the experience, Dirt 4 has no license, unlike Dirt Rally. Instead, Codemasters has created a procedural rally stage generator called 'Your Stage', which claims to have a billion possibilities from its five variables: length, complexity, location, time, and season.
Some of it may seem vague on the surface – running a stage in rain versus cloud doesn't change the underlying path in the late afternoon versus night – but that's only until you experience it yourself. It makes you appreciate the importance of your co-drivers speed notes - especially on thick fog days - and changes how racing is most commonly used to play the game.
For what it's worth, it's the official game of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, so it gets five tracks from there: Lyden Hill, England; Hodges, Sweden; Hell, Norway; Montealegre, Portugal; and Loch Breton, France. Because of the license, rallycross now has a proper structure for its race types. Landrush in Dirt 4 can be an extremely frustrating mode to play, so it's good that it's not integral to career progression. Dirt 4 borrows another aspect from Dirt Rally, which focuses on building a rally team. In the beginning, you start out as a driver for any team that will hire you.
After you score a few victories, you'll have enough credits to start your team. You don't need to just buy the car, but take care of the whole shebang. This means building and maintaining brands for sponsors, which are critical to financial success in the long run.
If that's not enough to distract from the on-road experience, you'll have to build facilities for your team, from the accommodation, catering, logistics, R&D, recycling to the workshop. Unfortunately, it's as sleepy as it sounds on paper, and you have to wonder why Codemasters is so interested in advancing office-cube-level realism with a series that once made a huge leap forward.
