Apple is expected to release new M2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models later this year. The M2 processor will be slightly more powerful than the M1 processor. However, while being a generation newer, reports suggest that the M2 processor will perform worse than the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips in terms of power and efficiency. Apple will eventually release high-end variants of the new M2 chip, such as the M2 Pro, to power the company's desktop and laptop portfolio.
The new M2 chip will power both the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. While the chip's specifications are unknown, the source indicates that the Pro laptop bears the model number J493.
